Lyrics to our song

Never chase girls
Chase dreams first
Motion picture drive
I concluded that my dream works
So I pace right
Never see my break lights
Never trust a person
But damn too many great whites
Never work without merit
Never live but don't cherish
'Cause we only born to perish
This is a luxury tariff
Here to preach a sermon Eric
And it's hysteric
They say you too pretentious don't get into that
Never the same, out in left like a democrat
I would like to present you with this rap award
And now I got more gigs than an apple store.
And yo you whiling boy
You ain't even stylin' boy
It's like I'm on a boat
Feelin' lonely on this Island Boy
My life'll never be the same
If never ever was
You'd probably feel my pain

(Chorus)
This is forever
This beat is on black pepper
You could get shook
If you lookin a little extra
Never fall off just make it a little better
And when you think it's sunny
That's when we change up the weather
And when you say you better
I bet I say never
And If you say you better
I bet I say never
And when you say you better
I bet I say never
And If you say you better
I bet I say never

I never do as I'm suppose to
Give me the Light, Sean Paul, 02
At homecoming
Yeah I went and brought my whole crew
I thought I killed it
Though they could not hear my vocals (Damn)
And they say why you roll that grape stuff?
I take a pull and wonder why the Beatles break up
Imagination is magic so when I wake up
Feel like I'm lookin' up at Hogwarts
Would it be wrong to have meetings in my ball shorts
The flow excessive
Like cops when they usin' whatcha call force
Xaph is beast you prolly shoulda brung the west
I swear I'm never like a nun when it comes to sex
And yeah I po-po-po-po-ker face the best bet
Frequent flyer miles
I'm tryin' to jet set
It's gonna take me higher
Might even make me flier
Life is a box of chocolates
That's why I prefer Godiva

(Chorus)
This is forever
This beat is on black pepper
You could get shook
If you lookin' a little extra
Never fall off just make it a little better
And when you think it's sunny
That's when we change up the weather
And when you say you better
I bet I say never
And If you say you better
I bet I say never
And when you say you better
I bet I say never
And If you say you better
I bet I say never

Analysis: Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen - Good Time

'Good Time' is a much more conventional video, since both artists are signed to major labels and the song is very mainstream.

Voyeurism
The video follows a loose narrative of a group of friends having a party in the woods, so we are given a lot of shots of general partying, with the participants seemingly unaware they are being watched.

Demands of Record Label
Both artists feature a huge amount in the video, and have both been done up to look as good as they can. The video opens with product placement of a Fiat car and a watch, both used by Jepsen.

Lyrics & Visuals
The lyrics are about having a good time, which is displayed throughout the video. There are some more specific examples as well such as when Owl City sings, "hands up" whilst the people in his car put their hands up, then it cuts to Jepsen's car where they all have their hands up too.

Music & Visuals
The music is very happy and intended for dancing to, which the video reflects by depicting lots of different events from a party in a woods, featuring really happy people. The video is also highly beatmatched, for example when Owl City drums on his steering wheel it syncs to the beat of the song.

Intertextuality
The video references the trope of going away with a group of friends and partying in a secluded forest, which features in a lot of films and other works.

Genre
'Good Time' features a lot of conventional elements of pop music videos, such as a focus on the artist (in this case artists), with the majority of shots featuring Jepsen and Owl City. There are also a lot of sequences related to partying, but not featuring rehearsed choreography like a lot of dance music videos.

Analysis: Tyler the Creator - Yonkers

'Yonkers' is not a typical music video, as Tyler the Creator (who also directed the video under the pseudonym Wolf Haley) was unsigned when it was released. Since there were no demands from a record label, he chose to create a more left field, unconventional video.

Voyeurism
The video features only one scene, of Tyler rapping in front of a white background. This creates a sense of extended voyeurism throughout the whole video, however this is somewhat negated by the fact that Tyler is rapping to the camera, which takes away the audiences sense of looking without being seen.

Demands of Record Label
Since the video only features shots of Tyler, the whole thing is in essence promoting him. He is shown wearing expensive clothes and jewellery, but with very dark writing and images scrawled on his body, showing off his unique selling point, which is that he raps about conventional rap topics as well as more twisted and taboo themes. This is further emphasised by him eating a cockroach and hanging himself at the end of the video.

Lyrics & Visuals
Tyler lip-syncs to the song throughout the whole video, creating a direct link to the lyrics. They are also explored in an abstract way through the video's dark imagery.

Intertextuality
The video is quite self-contained, featuring very few references to other works. However the lyrics of the song contain references to a huge variety of other music, such as Marvin Gaye or the song 'Airplanes' by B.o.B., a fellow rapper whom Tyler despises. He also refers to other media, such as Reptar, a character from the TV show Rugrats.

Goodwin's Points

Goodwin's points are a collection of elements that most music videos include. These are:

Voyeurism - reference to the notion of looking, pleasure in looking and being unseen

Genre Characteristics - specific features that relate to the genre of music (for example rock music will feature the band performing, dance music will feature elaborate dance sequences)

Lyrics & Visuals - the visuals will relate to the lyrics either directly (by taking a literal interpretation of what the singer is saying) or abstractly (linking to the mood or feelings expressed in the lyrics without following them exactly)

Music & Visuals - the visuals will relate to the music, by showing specific instruments being played, matching events to the beat, or linking with the themes, moods and ideas of the music.

Demands of Record Label - the record label will obviously want to make money, so they will have their own agenda for things they want to include in a music video, for example selling the artist, product placement, advertising

Intertextuality - reference to other texts (films, books, TV shows)

Our Star Persona

Since our original idea of following the original artist's look did not work out, we have decided to create a new persona for our star. We have changed it so the act is now solo, with just one rapper and no-one else.

One of the most important things about our rapper will be his sense of style. For this reason, we are hoping to put a lot of shots in the music video featuring, and base most of the promo artwork around, our star wearing his freshest threads.

Examples:
Jay-Z at Made In America Festival

Lucien Clarke for Supreme

A$AP Rocky for Clash Magazine

Clothing Brand Examples:
Money

Stussy

Mishka
These clothing brands are examples of what will appeal to our target audience.

Our Target Audience

Our target audience is mostly male, age 16-24, and generally a fan of hip-hop and more independent music. We think his audience will respond best to our music video and promo artwork because firstly, the song is quite an underground hip-hop style, with a male rapper. He raps about inspirational themes, so we are going to go for a more uplifting look to our work, which should attract a lot of young people, however hopefully will not alienate hardcore hip-hop fans.

Promo Artwork Problem

Our promo artwork and star persona was originally going to be based off the actual group who wrote and performed the song, however we have since realised that the aim of the project is to make an original star persona, so we will have to scrap this work and start again
